Greece an ideal wedding destination for many UK couples

20 August 2009

Greece is becoming a very popular place for people to get married, the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) has said.

Sofia Panayiotaki, director of the UK & Ireland office at GNTO, noted that part of the reason is to do with the hit film Mamma Mia!, which was filmed on the Sporades islands.

She said: "This year there has been an increase on the Sporades islands, which is Skopelos, Skiathos and Alonisos.

"A lot of people wanted to get married in the place that Meryl Streep was married."

Ms Panayiotaki also pointed out that Greece has a huge amount of history as the country "is 5,000 years old", which adds to its appeal.

The number of British couples heading to the Greek islands to get married has increased significantly over the last year, according to wedding website Marry Abroad.

Figures released in March revealed that the number of people who visit Greece to say ''I do'' rose by 29 per cent in the previous 12 months.
