Explosion outside Greek state property company
19 March 2009
Unknown attackers on Thursday exploded a bomb outside the offices of a Greek state property firm implicated in a recent land scandal, causing damage but no injuries, the police said.
The bomb placed outside the offices of the Greek real estate corporation (KED), which is guarded by private security, damaged the entrance and a car parked nearby, police spokesman Panagiotis Stathis told reporters.
"Nobody was injured," Stathis said. "This is a serious case and it is under investigation."
The corporation is on the side road of a busy Athens avenue a few hundred metres from the central police headquarters and near the Supreme Court. Initial reports had indicated a gas explosion. The real estate corporation was recently implicated in a land swap scandal between the government and an influential Orthodox monastery which lost the Greek state millions of euros in revenue.
Bombings and other acts of violence have increased in Athens since the police shot dead a teenager in December.
