Greece signs major infrastructure deal
19 March 2010
Greece's government has signed a major infrastructure deal, worth about EUR 290 million (USD 396 million).
The Infrastructure Ministry said on Tuesday it awarded the construction of a 48 kilometre highway in Western Greece to domestic builders AEGEK, Michaniki, Ionios and Italy's Consorzio Stabile Italimprese.
The highway, expected to be completed in 2013, is the first major infrastructure project the socialist government has awarded since it came to power on Oct. 4.
The Minister has pledged to overhaul procedures to ensure projects do not fall behind schedule or over-run their cost budgets.
Greece is expected to announce later this month the tendering details of projects worth about EUR 1.8 billion to build an airport and two highways on the island of Crete.
